  • Drive Quality Testing and Fuel Economy Estimation for a 2WD Vehicle on a Chassis Dynamometer

    Introduction

    REPS is a software suite developed by Revolutionary Engineering for test cell data acquisition and control. REPS has been designed to be flexible and customizable for a multitude of test cell applications. RE has successfully implemented REPS for axle testing, engine dynamometers, emissions testing, valve-train dynamics testing and chassis dynamometers. The application discussed in this document involved using REPS in a 2WD chassis dynamometer to perform drive quality testing and miles per gallon estimation of a FWD or RWD vehicle.

  • High-Altitude Engine Emissions Testing

    INTRODUCTION

    Our customer is an industry leader in vehicle and engine emissions testing. The customer is a complete high-altitude vehicle and engine emission testing laboratory serving automotive manufacturers, automotive suppliers, petrochemical companies, and the research community since 1979. Present at the customer site are several test cells devoted to emissions testing with an emphasis on high-altitude calibration development, climate controlled air-intake and alternative fuel capabilities; six engine test cells are designed for research and development of gas and diesel engines. A wide variety of gas and diesel engine testing is performed in these test cells including the Federal Test Procedure (FTP) as established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

    Revolutionary Engineering Pro System (REPS) is a software suite developed by Revolutionary Engineering Inc. for test cell data acquisition and control. REPS has been designed to be flexible and customizable for a multitude of test cell applications. Revolutionary Engineering has successfully implemented REPS for axle testing, engine dynamometers, chassis dynamometers, emissions testing, and valve-train dynamics testing. The application discussed in this paper involves implementation of REPS at the customer site for four of the six engine emission test cells in order to upgrade the cells for robust and advanced testing requirements.

  • Hybrid Vehicle PEC Charger System

    Summary

    RE’s PEC Charger system was built with flexibility – allowing the user to load different CAN databases, defining the messages to read and write, defining the system limits for faults, setting different battery charge voltage, current and state of charge, and manual troubleshooting.  With its flexibility, it can easily meet any battery charger specification.  The software was programmed with National Instruments LabVIEW, which allows the software to be modular and expandable

  • NVH Brake Testing on a Chassis Dynamometer

    Introduction

    Our customer is a global leader in automotive manufacturing. Aside from fuel economy and drive quality, sound quality (which consists of noise and vibration) is also an important aspect of vehicle marketing. Sound quality has impact on customers’ perception of the vehicle’s comfort and safety. The study and modification of noise and vibration characteristics of vehicles is called NVH (Noise, vibration, and harshness) also known as N&V (noise and vibration).

    In automobiles, brake noise is one of the most important issues because it may signify a faulty safety part. Brake noise is referred to squealing – a phenomenon of dynamic instability. Brake squeals come from fiction couplings. The disc rotor magnifies the sound waves. Mid to high frequency squeals (4 ~ 16 kHz) are contributed from the pads and rotor coupling. The caliper, anchor bracket, knuckle and suspension, pad and rotor contributes to the low frequency squeals (1~ 3 kHz).

    Brakes are one of the major warranty issues for automotive manufacturers. They are expensive to repair and replace. Our customer must perform extensive brake noise tests, diagnose and resolve the noise issues. This document demonstrates how REPS was used for NVH brake testing.   • Prototyping an Integrated Electric Powertrain (IPT) with the Revolutionary Engineering Pro-System (REPS)

    Introduction

    At a testing facility for a leading global automotive supplier located in Michigan, engineers design and test prototypes of Integrated Electric Powertrain (IPT) systems for use in compact fuel cell powered cars. Based on stringent specifications provided by their customers, the engineers at this facility take to a challenging mission – designing the IPT from scratch in a burgeoning industry of electric and hybrid vehicle technology.

    As with all prototyping, the need for a flexible yet robust testing facility is paramount. Our customer needed to upgrade its three outdated dynamometer test cells in order to better accommodate the various testing involved in designing the IPTs. For Revolutionary Engineering (RE), this was no daunting task.

  • Torque Converter and Lockup Clutch Testing using Revolutionary Engineering Pro System (REPS)

    Summary

    REPS is a powerful software that can be adapted to many test systems such as the 200 HP dyno.  With REPS, our customer has the flexibility to create as many control modes as needed.  The profile editor built into the software allows our customer to make changes to their test profiles or create new ones as new specifications are required.  REPS is scalable and modular, making the addition of new hardware easy.

  • Valvetrain Dynamics Measurement System

    RE’s Valvetrain Measurement System is a flexible integrated system that is used for measuring the valvetrain dynamics of engines.  The NI PXI controllers allow the system to acquire critical signals over EtherCAT at high speeds.  It also all allows high speed data acquisition synchronization with the lifts, velocities, strain, etc.  The software was programmed with National Instruments LabVIEW, which allows the software to be modular and expandable.  This system will allow engineers to design and verify camshaft behaviors for optimal engine performance.
